The Faster Rail / High Speed Rail project between Sydney and Newcastle is the first stage of Australia's proposed national high-speed rail network. The project would deliver a dedicated high-speed passenger railway linking Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, the Central Coast, Sydney CBD, Parramatta and Western Sydney Airport, with trains capable of speeds up to 320 km/h. The proposed service would reduce Newcastle-Sydney travel times to around one hour and Central Coast journeys to approximately 30 minutes. Key objectives include improving connectivity, supporting housing growth, increasing transport capacity on one of Australia's busiest rail corridors, boosting regional economic development, and improving access to employment centres across Greater Sydney and the Hunter region.
