The NSW Government’s Future Fleet Program will begin replacing the 55 Tangara suburban train sets by March 2027, with a mandated 50% local content target. Tangaras, introduced in 1988, make up about a quarter of Sydney Trains’ suburban fleet.

This replacement marks the start of a long-term pipeline of locally built trains extending into the 2050s, aiming to strengthen NSW and Australian rail manufacturing, secure skilled jobs, and expand apprenticeships. Future fleet renewals include the Millennium and OSCAR fleets in the 2040s and the Waratahs in the 2050s. Transport for NSW and Sydney Trains intend to use this pipeline to establish sustainable rolling‑stock manufacturing and deepen collaboration across the supply chain.
