The Great Western Battery is a proposed 330 MW / 3.5 GWh battery energy storage project located at Wallerawang in New South Wales. Developed by Neoen, the project will leverage existing electricity network infrastructure in the vicinity of the decommissioned Wallerawang Power Station to connect to the National Electricity Market (NEM).
Key components of the project include:
- Construction of large-scale battery energy storage facilities, including battery enclosures and associated control systems.
- Installation of inverters and transformers required for energy conversion and grid integration.
- Development of a transmission line connection to the existing Wallerawang Sub-station.
The project is separate from the nearby Wallerawang Battery development, despite being located within the same broader area.
Once operational, the Great Western Battery will provide critical grid support services, including Fast Frequency Response (FFR) to the National Electricity Market. It will also enhance energy reliability and system resilience by providing reserve capacity to support power supplies across the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) and facilitate the integration of additional renewable energy generation into the grid.
