Muswellbrook Pumped Hydro Project is a proposed pumped hydro energy storage project being developed by Muswellbrook Pumped Hydro Pty Ltd, a joint venture between AGL and Idemitsu Australia, near Muswellbrook in New South Wales. The project proposes to use an existing mine void at Idemitsu's Muswellbrook site as the lower reservoir and Bells Mountain as the upper reservoir. Water would be pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir and released through hydroelectric turbines to generate electricity. The project has a proposed capacity of up to 500 MW with 8 hours of energy storage and a development footprint of approximately 420 hectares. The project includes upper and lower reservoirs, a pumped hydro power station, grid connection infrastructure and associated works.
