South West Illawarra Rail Link

The South West Illawarra Rail Link (SWIRL) is a proposed passenger and freight rail connection linking Port Kembla and the Illawarra with Western Sydney, including the Western Sydney Aerotropolis and surrounding growth areas. Proponents argue the project would improve freight access to Port Kembla, support future container terminal operations, provide passenger rail connectivity between the Illawarra and Western Sydney, and help accommodate future population and employment growth. Various studies have been commissioned by regional business and local government stakeholders to examine the economic case for the corridor.
