Hunter Valley-based engineering and fabrication company Alfabs Engineering Group has credited its long-standing partnership with the Industry Capability Network (ICN) as an important contributor to the company’s continued growth and success in major infrastructure projects.

Founded in Kurri Kurri in 1986, Alfabs has grown into one of the region’s largest employers, with more than 300 staff across fabrication, construction and engineering operations. The company recently completed a successful IPO during the 2023–24 financial year and is now focused on expanding further across New South Wales and Queensland.

Senior Manager of Bids and Business Development Jason Torrance said ICN continues to play a valuable role in helping Alfabs identify opportunities and connect with major project proponents.

“ICN has become part of our daily business development process,” Mr Torrance said.

“One of the first things I do each morning is review the ICN Gateway to see what projects have been posted. From there, our team assesses opportunities and submits expressions of interest where we can add value.”

“We probably engage with two or three opportunities a week through the platform.”

Alfabs has successfully delivered work on several major infrastructure projects identified through ICN, including fabrication and installation works for the Jesmond footbridge as part of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass project for Fulton Hogan.

“The ICN briefings and networking opportunities are extremely valuable because they allow regional businesses like ours to meet directly with major contractors and decision-makers,” Mr Torrance said.

“For the Jesmond footbridge project, our estimating manager attended an ICN briefing, connected with key Fulton Hogan representatives, and that ultimately helped open the door for Alfabs to secure the work.”

As a Transport for NSW and Queensland Government accredited CC3 fabricator, Alfabs regularly participates in large-scale infrastructure projects across the state.

Mr Torrance said ICN plays an important role in ensuring regional manufacturers and fabricators remain visible and competitive within major project supply chains.

“Being regionally based has never stopped us from competing for complex infrastructure work, and ICN helps showcase the capability that exists in regional NSW,” he said.

“With our recent IPO and continued growth, we’re focused on expanding our footprint while continuing to deliver high-quality outcomes for major clients.”
